La Paz Bay is one of only a handful of places on earth where whale sharks aggregate seasonally in numbers large enough to make encounters reliably bookable. From October through May, the world's largest fish — up to 12 meters and filter-feeding on the plankton the Sea of Cortez produces — gather in the bay in concentrations that licensed tour operators can find on any given morning. You enter the water from a panga and swim alongside them. The sharks are indifferent. The experience is transformative in a way that photographs cannot accurately represent.
SEMARNAT regulations govern every aspect of the encounter — licensed operators only, no touching, snorkel only (no SCUBA), maximum two snorkelers per shark at any time. The rules are actively enforced and have preserved both the sharks and the quality of the experience over years of high visitation. Book with a licensed operator. Swimming Alongside the World's Largest Fish
Whale sharks are filter feeders — they cruise near the surface with their mouths open, consuming plankton and small fish. They are indifferent to snorkelers. You enter the water from a panga, fin alongside the shark at a respectful distance of 3 meters, and move with it for as long as it stays in the area. The scale is the thing that photographs cannot prepare you for: a 10-meter animal moving at walking speed through clear water next to your body.
One of Earth's Most Reliable Aggregation Sites
La Paz Bay is one of only a handful of locations globally where whale sharks aggregate seasonally in numbers large enough to make encounters reliable. The bay's position in the Sea of Cortez, the water temperature, and the plankton density that the currents produce create conditions that draw the sharks from October through May with consistency that tour operators can build itineraries around. It is not a guarantee, but it is as close to one as wildlife encounters get.
Strict Guidelines That Protect Both Sharks and Experience
SEMARNAT regulates whale shark encounters in La Paz Bay — licensed operators only, maximum of two snorkelers per shark at any time, no fins used near the animals, no touching, and no SCUBA diving (snorkel only). The regulations are actively enforced and have been credited with maintaining the quality of the encounter over time. Booking with a licensed operator is not optional; it is how you ensure the experience is done correctly.
Early Departure · Open Water · Multiple Encounters
Tours depart La Paz marina early — typically 7–8 AM. The transit to the feeding grounds takes 20–45 minutes depending on the day's aggregation location. Most tours provide 90–120 minutes in the water with multiple shark encounters before returning to the marina by noon or 1 PM. Gear — mask, snorkel, wetsuit, fins — is provided. Underwater cameras with wide-angle lenses produce the best results.
Espíritu Santo + Whale Sharks — Full Day
Several La Paz operators combine whale shark encounters with a stop at Isla Espíritu Santo — snorkeling the sea lion colony at Los Islotes before or after the whale shark session. The combined itinerary makes for a full day and represents the most efficient use of a single trip from Cabo to La Paz. Book the combined tour if you have not previously visited Espíritu Santo.
La Paz — 2 Hours from Cabo on Highway 1
La Paz is 2 to 2.5 hours from Cabo San Lucas on Highway 1 through the desert interior of the peninsula. The drive is straightforward and scenic. Several Cabo-based operators run day trips that include transportation from your hotel, removing the need to navigate independently. Staying overnight in La Paz allows an early start and removes the drive pressure from both ends of the day.
