Quick Facts
Los Cabos at a Glance
By Bryan Rayburn ·
- 01Los Cabos sits at the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula — 1,000 miles south of the U.S. border — where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez.
- 02The region comprises two distinct towns 20 miles apart: Cabo San Lucas (marina, nightlife, mega-resorts) and San José del Cabo (colonial, arts, boutique hotels).
- 03Average highs range from 75°F (24°C) in January to 95°F (35°C) in August; the peak dry season runs November through June.
- 04Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) is served by direct flights from most major U.S. and Canadian cities — typically under 3 hours from the West Coast.
- 05The U.S. dollar is widely accepted alongside the Mexican peso; ATMs dispense pesos at competitive exchange rates.
- 06Highlights include world-class sportfishing, gray whale migration (Dec–Apr), snorkeling the Sea of Cortez, surfing at Cerritos Beach, and farm-to-table dining in the Art District.
Where to Go
Explore the towns of Baja's golden coast
Each town carries its own rhythm — from marina glamour to bohemian surf culture. Discover what makes each one worth the trip.
Two Cabos, One Peninsula
While Cabo San Lucas draws visitors with legendary nightlife, world-class sportfishing, and sprawling all-inclusive resorts along Médano Beach, San José del Cabo offers a quieter, more colonial alternative — cobblestone streets, art galleries, and farm-to-table dining that attracts a different kind of traveler entirely. The two towns are 20 miles apart and feel like different worlds.
According to frequent visitors, the best Los Cabos trip combines both: a few nights in the energy of Cabo San Lucas, then a slower day or two in San José — with a side trip to La Paz or Todos Santos for those who want to see the real Baja. Budget-focused travelers often find that basing in San José del Cabo gives better value, a walkable town center, and easy access to the Tourist Corridor resorts.
| Category | Cabo San Lucas | San José del Cabo |
|---|---|---|
| Vibe | Party, marina, resort row | Colonial, arts, relaxed |
| Main Beach | Médano — swimmable, lively | Estero Beach — dramatic, not safe for swimming |
| Dining | Beachfront clubs, tourist cantinas | Art District bistros, farm-to-table |
| Nightlife | Legendary (Cabo Wabo, Squid Roe) | Low-key wine bars, rooftop lounges |
| Resorts | Mega all-inclusives, marina hotels | Boutique hotels, small luxury properties |
| Shopping | Souvenir strip, marina shops | Art galleries, artisan markets |
| Families | Yes — best with a pool resort plan | Naturally quieter, easier to walk |
| Budget | Mid-to-high; peaks Dec–Apr | Mid-to-high; better value off-strip |

Trip Planning
How to Plan Your Los Cabos Trip
- 1
Choose your base town
Decide between Cabo San Lucas (nightlife, fishing, all-inclusives), San José del Cabo (colonial charm, boutique hotels, Art District dining), or the Tourist Corridor (luxury resorts mid-way between the two). Most first-timers choose Cabo San Lucas for convenience and energy.
- 2
Book flights into SJD early
Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) receives direct flights from most U.S. and Canadian cities. Book 3–4 months ahead for peak season (November through April) to lock in the best fares. Southwest, American, Delta, United, Alaska, and WestJet all operate direct routes.
- 3
Arrange your airport transfer before landing
Book a private shuttle or hotel pickup before you arrive — the SJD arrival hall has aggressive timeshare representatives. Licensed private shuttles are the safest and most reliable option. Uber operates in the area but is not officially permitted at the airport curb.
- 4
Pair your Cabo stay with a night in San José
Even if you're based in Cabo San Lucas, plan at least one evening in San José del Cabo's Art District for dinner. The 20-mile drive along the Tourist Corridor takes about 30 minutes. The colonial contrast — cobblestones, galleries, candlelit restaurants — is remarkable.
- 5
Add a Baja day trip
Build in one excursion beyond the corridor: La Paz is 2 hours north and offers whale shark encounters (Oct–Apr) and Isla Espíritu Santo sea-kayaking. Todos Santos Pueblo Mágico is 45 minutes north with a legendary hotel, surf breaks, and a thriving art scene. Either enriches a Los Cabos visit significantly.
