Isla Espíritu Santo is a UNESCO World Heritage site 45 minutes by panga from the La Paz waterfront — 34 square kilometers of uninhabited volcanic island in the Sea of Cortez that Jacques Cousteau called "the world's aquarium." The designation holds. The waters around the island support sea lion colonies, whale sharks, manta rays, hammerhead schools at the offshore seamounts, and snorkeling conditions that rival anywhere in the Pacific. The island itself is equally striking: ochre and red volcanic cliffs, hidden turquoise coves, and beaches that have no permanent structures on them.
Most visitors come on day trips from La Paz — a standard itinerary covers two or three snorkeling sites, a visit to the sea lion colony at Los Islotes, and lunch on the beach at Ensenada Grande, returning by mid-afternoon. For those willing to extend, multi-day sea kayak camping circumnavigations of the island are available through La Paz outfitters and represent one of the premier wilderness experiences in Mexico. Permits are managed through CONANP and capacity is limited.

Los Islotes Colony — Swim With Wild Sea Lions
The sea lion colony at Los Islotes, a small rock outcropping just north of Espíritu Santo, is one of the most accessible wildlife encounters in Baja. Juvenile sea lions approach snorkelers and divers out of curiosity — the interaction is entirely on their terms, which makes it more extraordinary. Most day trips from La Paz include a stop here.
La Ballena · El Candelero · Ensenada Grande
The island's eastern coast is sheltered from Pacific swell by the island itself, producing calm, clear conditions across multiple coves. La Ballena and El Candelero offer the best reef snorkeling with diverse marine life. Ensenada Grande, the island's largest bay, is the anchorage of choice for overnight boats and the most dramatic arrival by panga.
Multi-Day Paddling Routes
Espíritu Santo and its smaller neighbor Isla Partida form a 20-kilometer paddling circuit that is one of the premier sea kayaking routes in Mexico. Outfitters in La Paz run overnight and multi-day kayak camping trips that circumnavigate the islands, sleeping on beaches that have no permanent infrastructure. Permits are required through CONANP.
Blue-Footed Boobies · Whale Sharks · Manta Rays
The waters around Espíritu Santo and the nearby seamounts support one of Baja's most diverse marine ecosystems. Blue-footed and brown boobies nest on the island's volcanic cliffs. Whale sharks aggregate in the La Paz channel from October through May. Manta ray populations are dense along the eastern coast. Hammerhead sharks school at the offshore seamounts.
Volcanic Cliffs, Red Rock, and Turquoise Coves
The island's geology is dramatic — red and ochre volcanic rock, sheer cliff faces, and hidden coves where the water shifts from deep blue to electric turquoise over white sand. The island is uninhabited and will remain so under UNESCO protections. The contrast between the stark desert landscape above and the marine life-dense water below is the defining visual of a day trip here.
Day Trips from La Paz — Multiple Operators
Every major outfitter and hotel in La Paz runs day trips to Espíritu Santo. The standard trip leaves at 8 AM, includes snorkeling at two or three sites, a visit to the sea lion colony at Los Islotes, lunch on the beach at Ensenada Grande, and returns to La Paz by 4 PM. Tours range from basic shared pangas to private all-inclusive itineraries with gear and a naturalist guide.
